Salary Negotiation: Know Your Worth and Ask for It
Most job seekers accept the first offer they receive — and leave thousands of naira on the table. Negotiating your salary isn't rude; it's expected. Here's how to do it well.
Do Your Research First
Before you negotiate, know the market rate. Use Xoothjobs's Salary Insights page to check what similar roles pay in your location and industry. Knowledge is leverage — you can't negotiate well if you don't know what's fair.
Timing Is Everything
Negotiate after you receive the offer, not during the interview. The best moment is after they say 'We'd like to offer you the position.' At that point, they've already decided they want you — you have maximum leverage.
The Counter-Offer Formula
1. Express gratitude: 'Thank you so much for this offer — I'm really excited about the role.'
2. State your counter: 'Based on my research and experience, I was hoping for ₦X.'
3. Justify it: 'This aligns with the market rate for this role in Lagos, and my experience in [specific skill] would allow me to contribute from day one.'
4. Be silent. Let them respond. Don't fill the pause with concessions.
Beyond Salary: Negotiate the Package
If they can't move on salary, negotiate other benefits:
• Remote/hybrid work arrangement
• Annual training or certification budget
• Performance bonus structure
• Additional leave days
• Health insurance upgrade
• Flexible working hours
Sometimes the non-monetary benefits are worth more than a small salary bump.
When to Walk Away
If the offer is significantly below market rate and they refuse to budge — even after you've presented data — it may be a signal about how the company values its employees. Don't be afraid to decline respectfully. The right opportunity will come.
